ZFTU Advocates for Safer and Fairer Work Conditions in Artisanal Mining

The ZFTU Secretary General and Co-Principal Alternate, Cde Shamu, speaking during the panel discussion on “Occupational Safety & Health and Social Security in the Artisanal Mining Sector,” the secretary General highlighted that artisanal and small scale miners are key contributors to Zimbabwe’s mining sector and rural livelihoods yet remain among the most vulnerable workers.
Cde Shamu called for:
1. Stronger occupational safety and health (OSH) systems and regular inspections in artisanal mining.
2. Extension of social security coverage through NSSA to informal miners.
3. Formalisation of artisanal mining to ensure protection, fair treatment, and recognition of workers’ rights.
4. Enhanced monitoring of foreign investors to comply with Zimbabwe’s National Labour and Environmental Laws
The TNF reaffirmed its commitment to promoting social dialogue, decent work, and safe workplaces for every worker formal or informal.
